Here's what we were working with - a front entry area that was bare dirt, uneven, and completely undefined. No real walkway, no structure, nothing that said 'welcome home.' It's the kind of thing you walk past every day and think 'we really need to do something about that.' This Oak Ridge homeowner finally did.
We installed Techo-Bloc pavers in a herringbone pattern with a clean border running the full length of the entry. Techo-Bloc is one of our go-to materials because it holds up, it looks sharp, and it ages well. The herringbone layout isn't just a style choice either - it adds structural strength and gives the surface a finished, intentional look that plain concrete can't touch.
We also built a retaining wall along the side of the entry with a river rock detail between the wall cap and the paver field. That wall does real work - it defines the grade change, keeps everything contained, and gives the whole space clean lines. The new step ties the paver surface right into the existing porch, so the entry flows as one connected space instead of feeling pieced together.
The landscape lighting is what pulls it all together after dark. We positioned fixtures along the retaining wall to wash light across the paver surface, and added lighting near the step and porch entry so the whole front of the house is visible and welcoming at night. It's not just decorative - a well-lit front entry is safer and it makes the home look great from the street.
The difference between before and after on this one is hard to overstate. What was a muddy, forgettable patch of ground in front of a nice house is now an entry that actually matches the home it belongs to. That's what good hardscaping and smart lighting can do.
